Making healthier choices...

My church did a week of fasting leading up to Good Friday and I felt that God was calling me to participate. I've done a Facebook fast before, but never fasted from food. I think God was asking me to rely on Him and to look to Him for  guidance with my eating habits since I've struggled to do so on my own. Not that I eat totally unhealthy, I don't eat fast food and I stopped drinking soda back in 2009, but I was still eating foods filled with fat and sugar and white flour. So during the week of fasting, I avoided all solid food for the first 2 days...I had smoothies, yogurt and lots of water. For the remaining 3 days I did a juice cleanse to reset my system and rid it of processed sugars and toxins. I had one "hangry" day where I was exhausted and extremely irritable, but it passed and I was able to complete my 5 days of fasting without any crazy incidents lol Since then, I have been really good at choosing better options, reading labels (sugar is in EVERYTHING) and avoiding white flour like the plague (which it basically is). I have dropped about 10 pounds, although reaching a specific number was never my goal, but my clothes fit me so much better and some are even too big for me now! I have been faced with temptation on several occasions, with donuts, which happen to be my favorite, and with tables of beautiful desserts on several occasions, BUT I have managed to stay strong and resist the urge! I'm not looking to torture myself or never allow myself to indulge in the good stuff, I'm just more picky now about when those moments occur and I want it to be worth it! So to help satisfy those sweet cravings, I've made a few desserts that still have sugar, but are not overloaded, in fact, the amount of sugar is really small compared to anything you can find at the grocery store in the cookie or candy aisles.

Fruit Sushi has probably been my most favorite creation so far, but it was a lot of hard work. I made it for a special occasion and it was the perfect ending to our Sushi dinner:

My all time favorite combination is peanut butter and chocolate! I used to eat Reese's peanut butter cups all the time. For holidays and birthdays, my family would always bring me a pack because they knew it was my favorite. Did you know those things are filled with so much junk?! It's crazy to think of how much toxic stuff is in our food nowadays, it's actually sickening to think about! Needless to say, I don't eat that stuff anymore. Last night I decided to create my own version of pb cups and it was a total success! I used extra dark chocolate, a little coconut oil and sunflower butter. Super yummy, very low sugar and no ingredients I can't pronounce.

I really think that as a Christian, God requires me to take better care of my body...spiritually, emotionally and physically. It's important that we do our best to stay healthy and love the body God has given us. The Bible says that our bodies are temples of the living God, so it is my responsibility to make sure this temple is a place fit for the King to dwell in!
